Background and Rationale
Cancer is the second leading
cause of death in the United States. The rate of nearly every type of
cancer is on the rise. Despite
billions of dollars in research, the morality rate has remained
virtually unchanged since the 1960's using conventional treatments such
as radiation, surgery, and
chemotherapy. Thus, there is considerable interest in using
immune modulation as an adjuvant for
cancer therapy.
Natural killer cells
are particularly important in destroying cancer cells.
Purpose of Study
To determine the in
vitro anti-cancer effects of Transfer FactorTM
and
Transfer Factor PlusTM
using PBMC isolated from human volunteers and assaying the increased
ability of the Natural
Killer cell population to kill K562 erythroleukemic cells.
Methods
1) PBMC killing of K562 (erythroleukemic)
cells
Results
2)
Transfer Factor increased
Natural Killer-cell
killing by 103% and Transfer Factor Plus
by 248%
Conclusions
Transfer Factor
TM
and
Transfer Factor PlusTM
induced immune-based lysis of K562 cells at a level
unprecedented in the director's experience or in the know medical
literature. Since
NK cell function is so crucial in
killing cancer
cells, these products are ideal candidates for cancer adjuvant therapy.
In addition, NK cells form a first line of defense against infections
from viruses and certain other microorganisms. Killing assays against
K562 cells have also been correlated with increased activity against
chronic and acute infections as well.

Baseline activity is the measure of the
unassisted ability of white blood cells to kill K562 leukemia (cancer)
cells. Natural Killer
Cells are the body's first line of defense against cancers and
viruses. TheTo increase in the
ability of white blood cells to kill K562 cancer cells is directly
related to the increase in Natural Killer Cell activity.

Understanding the Immune System Natural
Killer Cells
Natural Killer (NK) Cells
are yet another type of lethal lymphocyte. Like cytotoxic T cells, they
contain granules filled with potent chemicals. They are called "natural"
killers because they, unlike cytotoxic T cells, do not need to recognize
a specific antigen before swinging into action. They target tumor cells
and protect against a wide variety of infectious microbes. In several
immunodeficiency diseases, including
AIDS,
natural killer cell function
is abnormal. Natural killer cells may also contribute to immunoregulation by secreting high levels of influential lymphokines.
Both cytotoxic T cells and
natural killer cells kill on contact. The killer binds to its target,
aims its weapons, and then delivers a lethal burst of chemicals that
produces holes in the target cell's membrane. Fluids seep in and leak
out, and the cell bursts.
Natural Killer Cells The back-bone of the
human immune system.
The following links provide
information on research related to natural killer cells - one of the
main types of white blood cells which work as part of the human
immune
system. Natural killer cells are being found to play a primary role
in preventing and removing cancer cells in the body, removing many types
of viruses (including herpes and measles) and have been found low in
women with endometriosis.
